This superbly decorative selection of hand coloured prints is from Millin’s Peintures de Vases Antiques, or Paintings of Antiques Etruscan Vases published in 1808. The images are drawn from the Etruscan vases of the past, including vases from the Malmasion Collection, Musee Napoleon, Sevres & the Gallitzin Collection. It was intended to be the most magnificent publication of the age, dedicated to Queen Josephine. When first published the work cost 375 francs black and white, and 1125 francs when coloured, definitely a king’s ransom at the time.

It appeared at an exciting time in the history of the world & America in particular. The renewed interest the classical architecture of ancient Rome became known as the neo-classical Federal period in this country, strongly influencing the luminaries of the new world such as Jefferson & Washington in their architectural choices.

Each of these magnificent hand coloured prints measures approximately 18” by 24” with large margins not fully shown, and is accompanied by a copy of the title page. The paper is a strong, soft white, watermarked French wove.

The hand coloring has been beautifully rendered in water color some time ago by a professional colorist in the United Kingdom. The images do not do justice to the beauty and intensity of the hand coloring & each print is a veritable work of art.
