This work is by Phillip Gosse who was an authority on sea life. It is considered his most important work containing an image in color of every known British species.
The vivid lithograph illustrations were by W. Dickes after drawings by Gosse in brilliant color enhanced by gum arabic. There are 12 in total, all shown, with 11 in color. All the prints are in excellent condition as shown and the text is creamy white without foxing
The binding is in good condition for its age of 186 years and still strong in 1/4 calf with marbled paper boards. The spine is slightly chipped at the with highly decorative gold lettering and designs. The calf corners are chipped. The interior end papers are light yellow with slight foxing.
It measures 12 1/2 by 8 3/4 inches open and 5 1/2 by 8 3/4 closed, with the prints and text slightly smaller. It is a gem for the antique book collector or lover of sea creatures!
