These uncommon and beautiful pouchoir plates reflect a time in French Art still inspirational today. This delightful work purports to be a French translation of the works of Hippocrates, the Greek father of modern medicine. It is all tongue in cheek, of course, to provide the opportunity to create highly decorative and slightly risqué prints of ancient medical treatments.
Published in four volumes between 1932 and 1934 by Javal et Bourdeaux, the pouchoir prints were illustrated by the famous Art Deco artist Joseph Kuhn-Regnier. In total, only 2,335 sets were printed. Ours numbers #2179 and is on a high quality creamy wove paper called Velin de Marais. Each print measures approximately 9 inches wide by 11 inches long and is in excellent condition with brilliant coloring so typical of pochoir prints.
