The stunning artistry of William Daniell (1769–1837) makes these aquatints of animals an exceptionally rare treat. Daniell was painter of English landscapes and seaside images. Born to a bricklayer who died prematurely, young William was sent to live with his uncle Thomas Daniell, a prominent landscape artist and became his assistant.
These images, also featured in Wood's Zoology, portray animals, birds and insects in their natural habitats. Each image is an accurately detailed rendering printed as an aquatint, a process giving them the subtlety of watercolor painting. The composition and detail in each plate is striking, each a cameo of artistry and nature.
The plate area of each print measures approximately 7 1/4 inches by 10 inches to the plate mark on a creamy paper, with a additional margin. We have made allowances for condition on these prints due to their extreme scarcity and some have foxing as shown, though the image area of almost all is free of any defects.
