The Nouvelle Iconographie des Camellias was published in Ghent, Belgium starting in 1854 for 13 years. It is probably the rarest and greatest camellia catalogue of all, produced for the pioneer camellia nursery run by Ambroise Verschaffelt of the Nursery Verschaffelt family.

It was an exciting time in Europe, when the race to discover new plants and bring new cultivars to a never satiated public was in full swing. Prominent botanists collaborated on many of the seminal works of the day including Verschaffelt’s Nouvelle Iconographie des Camellias, now a very rare work. The lavishly illustrated plates, hand colored or finished lithographs contain a wonderful array of superb camellias blossoms. The color plates are very bright with velvety petals and vibrant coloring enhanced by gum arabic. The drawings are by Bernard Leon, printed on stone by G. Severeyns.

Each print measures approximately 6 1/2 by 10 inches, and is accompanied by the relevant descriptive text as well as a copy of the title page. The condition of these prints is excellent, with the paper generally quite white & the colors very vivid. All our prints are original antique prints, and these prints are about 170 years old. They are a rare find indeed for the lover of these beautiful flowers.
