Tsuchiya Koitsu (1879-1949) was a master of the Shin Hanga movement.  Born in rural Japan, he came the attention of the ukiyo-e master Kobayashi Kiyochika in whose house he lived and studied for 19 years.
In 1931 he met the publisher Watanabe Shozaburo who was spear-heading the new Shin Hanga movement, focused on natural beauty, light, landscapes, people, birds & flowers. Inspired by the new direction Koitsu began to create hauntingly beautiful scenes of Japan bathed in moonlight, sunsets and the changing seasons.
