Katori Takeshi, reknown mezzotint artist was born in Tokyo in 1949, first pursuing art in Kyoto where he studied oil painting and then entering the Fine Art Course at Tokyo Gakugei University where he studied etching. In 1977, he went to Europe and met mezzotint artists Hasegawa Kiyoshi and Hamaguchi Yozo. The time he spent there greatly influenced his style focusing on creating still-life prints in an earlier European manner which became his primary motif.
Katori has exhibited widely and received great recognition for his distinctive mezzotints. His works are included in the collections of the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art, the Library of Congress, the British Museum in London, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Australia and the Empress of Japan bought this work for her person collection
We are pleased to offer “Three Peonies”, 2009, an intaglio mezzotint, a composition which captures elements of a 17th century Dutch still-life painting. The beauty of the flowers is in stark contrast to their ephemeral nature and the background that highlights their brief existence.
