We are pleased to offer a selection of prints from Les Roses by Pierre Joseph Redoute, published in Paris 1828. These excellent hand colored stipple engravings depict many different rose varieties, and mark the high point of Redoute's career as a botanical illustrator.

Pierre Joseph Redoute was born in Luxembourg in 1759 and began his career painting the cathedrals of Northern Europe. Later, at the age of 23, he was inspired to pursue botanical illustration after viewing the works of Jan van Huysum and Rachel Ruysch. Redoute's talents soon caught the attention of the Dutch painter Gerard van Spaendonck and the botanist & gentry man Charles Louis L'Héritier de Brutelle. L'Hertier served as Redoute's teacher, instructing him on the finer points of plant anatomy. L'Héritier also introduced Redoute to the members of the court of Versailles, eventually leading to Redoute's appointment as a royal painter. Redoute tutored Queen Marie-Antoinette, Empress Josephine, Marie-Louise, and Queen Marie-Amelie. After the French Revolution, van Spaendonck helped Redoute find work at the Les Jardins de Plantes at the Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris.

Each print is on a fine light creamy paper with strong plate marks. The stipple engravings are superb and the colors are still bright and fresh. Each print is accompanied by the descriptive text. All are original authentic antique prints, not the later copies and are guaranteed to be the age stated.
