A man of vision, with a talent for organization and administration, he founded an empire for ornithological illustration, publishing more than forty large folio volumes. These works contain over 3,000 plates, all superbly drawn and meticulously hand colored. The first work appeared in 1831 and the last in 1888, seven years after Gould's death.
Of these six volumes of hummingbirds, consisting of 418 hand colored plates, even fewer have the highly prized gold or silver iridescence, produced by layering gold or silver leaf under the watercolor paint to mirror the shimmering beauty of each bird. This process is now lost to modern colorists and has become the hallmark of authenticity for Gould hummingbirds, as many now offered on the market are later editions without the characteristic gilding. So it is with great pleasure that we offer this authentic ollection of hummingbird prints, most with the treasured iridescence, all from volume volume III, with the largest and showiest species. Donald Heald, the renowned American Book dealer, calls this volume "the distilled essence of a masterpiece...the heart of the work"

These prints are on fine heavy paper in excellent condition, measuring approximately 14 1/4" by 21 1/4", accompanied by the original descriptive text & a copy of the title page to volume III. The provenance is the collection of Lord Kennet of the Dene. References: Fine Bird Books, p.102, Bird Artists of the World, p. 259.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0642/0830/6245/files/panteek-antique-prints-print-default-title-john-gould-hummingbird-princess-helena-s-coquette-28822251864133.jpg?v=1760207561
kip-nouveau-theatre-grand-bretagne-burlington-house-pickadilly
Kip Nouveau Theatre Grand Bretagne Burlington House Pickadilly

Burlington House in Pickadilly, London of Rt Hon Charles Boyle , Baron Clifford, Earl of Burlington, Earl of Corke, Ireland Gentlaman of the Beddchamber
23 1/2 by 20 inches
JKP9 Price: $1095

Johannes Kip (1653-1722) was a Dutchman who settled in England at the end of the 17th century. Late in 1897, William Henry Jackson (1843-1942), noted American photographer joined the company as a partner, adding thousands of negatives of USA landmarks produced by Jackson to the company’s inventory. Jackson had been a photographer with the U.S. Geological Survey in the 1870s, which took him all over the west and cemented his reputation as one of the foremost landscape photographers of his time. During the 1880s Jackson continued to travel extensively, photographing hotels, city views, railroad lines, important buildings, and more. This latter work was to become a definitive record of the history of European thought and a remarkable reference for all aspects of eighteenth-century European civilization. These volumes were published between 1791-1798, and were edited by Lamarck & Bruguiere. The backdrop of the publication was the French Revolution, when, in 1793 Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette went to the guillotine. It was a time of great transformation in France & the reorganization in a democratic manner of many of the establishments previously dependent on the whims of royal patronage. The old Jardin des Plantes became the Musée National d'Histoire Naturelle (National Museum of Natural History), run by twelve professors in twelve different scientific fields, one of whom was Lamarck.

Jean Baptiste Pierre Antoine de Monet, Chevalier de Lamarck, born in 1744 to a military family, attended a Jesuit seminary for a short period before becoming a soldier, retiring with a distinguished battle record. Lamarck began to study medicine and botany; in 1778 his book on the plants of France, Flore Française, was published to great acclaim, in part due to the support of Buffon.

Buffon secured him a post as an underpaid assistant at the Jardin des Plantes, from which position he was able to propose the transformation of the Jardin des Plantes into the Natural History Museum. He also coined the word “biology”.

His work was never popular during his lifetime. Lamarck did not enjoy the respect or prestige enjoyed by his patron Buffon or his colleague & rival Cuvier, who attempted to discredit his theories. Lamarck struggled with life long poverty & lack of recognition for his contributions to science. When he died, on December 28, 1829, he received a pauper’s funeral, buried in a grave for five years & then dug up, probably to be placed among the huge quantities of bones stored in the catacombs of Paris.

Purpurroter Kousinot Apple
6 3/4 by 10 inches
GO068 $45

These prints are highly decorative chromolithographs of apples and pears, in the manner of Duhamel de Monceau & quite beautifully displayed on the page.
