We are very pleased to present Toulouse-Lautrec posters from the original 1950 Andre Sauret edition, now itself a rare vintage issue.

From 1891 to 1900, Toulouse-Lautrec published 31 posters of the people of Montmartre, the Bohemian district of Paris where he lived with other famous artists of the time, such as Van Gogh. It was the “Street Art” of the 19th century and features a diverse selection of places and people, from the Moulin Rouge and Aristide Bruant, to cyclist Jimmy Michael, and even Napoleon. His inspiration was in the inhabitants and locations in Montmartre, inhabited by the demi-monde of showgirls, ladies of pleasure, artists, philosophers and poets, a very different environment from his aristocratic upbringing.

The posters were from bold sketches in situ by Lautrec, with preliminary studies then made in oils, to a final design on thick Manila paper for transfer to the lithographer’s stone. Printing was in strong colors, usually four in number.

Henri Marie Raymond de Toulouse-Lautrec Monfa (1864-1901) was born in a chateau in Albi, France, the child Comte Alphonse and Comtesse Adèle Tapié de Celeyran. He started drawing early on and was encouraged by his parents. Health problems resulted in the poor development of his legs and he achieved a height of only 5’ 1”, with a fully grown torso on short legs.

His career spanned only less than 20 years, mostly all in Montmartre.  He sadly died of the effects of alcoholism at the age of 36. During his life he created 737 canvases, 275 watercolors, 363 prints and posters, 5,084 drawings, some ceramic and stained glass work, and an unknown number of lost works. He is among the most beloved of painters of this epoch.

Each print is on high quality, thick paper measuring approximately 9 1/2 by 12 1/2 inches, in brilliant color with no defects. They are stone lithographs from originals in the collection of the Bibliotheque Nationale Library in Paris. The Sauret Edition is now very scarce and was made with great care, entirely unlike the “art poster” reproductions commonly available today.
