Butcher's Broom SOW560 $25
Each print measures approximately 5 1/2 inches by 9 inches.

James Sowerby was one of the “inner circle” in the great age of botanical illustration in England, and a central figure in many of the publications of the day.  His illustrations are found in Curtis Botanical Magazine, Curtis Flora Londinensis & William Baxter’s British flowering Plants, easily recognizable for their characteristic simplicity of line & elegance.

Sowerby came from an illustrious English family of naturalists and illustrators.  After studying painting at the Royal Academy, he became one of England’s foremost botanical illustrators and engravers, producing in conjunction with Sir James Smith his great work English Botany.  This work is an attempt to comprehensively portray British wildflowers, many of which have disappeared and some of which reappeared as they were taken to America by successive generations of emigrants.  There are many beloved flowers in the 2,592 illustrations contained in this work.

We are delighted to offer a selection of plates from the first edition of this work, published in 36 volumes from 1791 to 1814.  Its beautiful colors, strong plate marks and characteristic date markings and plate numbers distinguish this edition.

All the plants are hand colored and are larger and more beautiful than the two later editions of Sowerby.  The plates have never been trimmed and measure approximately 5 1/2 by 9 inches.  The condition is excellent with very little foxing or toning and only occasional spotting.  The paper is strong with some sheets bearing the watermark.  Please look at the photos carefully, as they are very accurate.  Each print is accompanied by the original descriptive text & a copy of the title page.
