Paul Sandby Select Views in England, Scotland & Ireland 1781

We are pleased to offer a selection of architectural prints of stately English homes drawn by Paul Sandby from “A Collection of One Hundred and Fifty Select Views, in England, Scotland and Ireland”, published in 1781. Many stately homes of yesteryear are pictured in Scotland, Ireland, Wales & England. They are all delightfully nostalgic views into the past, beautifully hand colored recently by one of the last great professional English colorists.

Paul Sandby was an English topographical watercolorist and graphic artist, born in Nottingham and brother of Thomas Sandby. He began his career as a draughtsman and later moved on to live with his brother at Windsor, where he made many drawings of Windsor and Eton. Thomas Gainsborough, the most versatile painter of the 18th century and Sandby’s contemporary, considered Sandby to be the only English landscape artist who painted ‘real views from nature’ as opposed to artificial, idealized drawings.

Each print measures approximately 10 ½ inches wide by 8 inches long. The paper is light creamy in color with a very occasional fox mark. It is a strong thick handmade paper, chain lined & watermarked. A copy of the title page & the original text description accompanies each print. These prints are in marvelous condition for their age of over 225 years.
