Rees Cyclopedia 1802-1819

Bee Eater, Hoopoe RCD39 $45
Each print measures approximately 8 1/2 inches by 10 3/4 inches.

We are pleased to offer these high quality hand colored engravings from the Rees Cyclopedia. The early years of the nineteenth century saw a flowering of encyclopedias publishing in Britain, Europe and America. Rees's Cyclopaedia, one of several published around this time, contains fascinating information about every aspect of life including the industrial and scientific revolutions of the time. The work is particularly distinguished by the beautiful quality of the engravings, done by engravers such as Wilson Lowry & John Farey, Jr. Encyclopedias were published in Scotland, as a result of the Scottish Enlightenment, for education there was of a higher standard than in the rest of Britain.

Many of these prints are exceedingly decorative, as well as informative, and they have been beautifully hand colored for us in England by one of the most talented colorist of fish, shell, and mammal prints.

Each print measures approximately 8 1/2 inches by 10 3/4 inches, on thick, white paper with no foxing. There is no title page or text, as we purchased these authentic, antique prints as a collection of plates.
