Miyamoto Japanese Woodblock Prints

Shunpu, Spring Wind,  162/200
Numbered, Signed and Dated by Artist in Pencil
29 1/2 by 23 inches  SKY16 $1, 250

These impressionistic woodblock print landscapes are by Shufu Miyamoto. Born in Fukuoka prefecture, Japan in 1950, he found his calling as a woodblock print maker after initially studying oil painting under Ioka Osamu. The prints are limited to editions of 100-200. The paper has a deeply embossed seal and water mark with the artists name and "self cut and print by the artist" in lower right margin. The paper is a thick, high quality Japanese washi paper.

A romantic and dreamlike effect results from the extensive use of bokashi, a technique of gradation of colors to achieve lightness and darkness, requiring laborious hand application of color to the block for each print produced. In this technique, Miyamoto follows a tradition used by such masters as Hokusai and Hiroshige.

He has exhibited extensively and his works can be found in collections worldwide including the US.

The prints are in excellent condition, capturing the evocative effect of seasons and weather on the landscape in a manner that makes these woodblock prints highly desirable.
