Passenger Pigeon EXTINCT & Carolina Turtle Dove DEB74 $75
Measuring approximately 8 3/4 inches by 11 1/4 inches

We are pleased to offer prints from the second volume of the comprehensive work The Zoology of New York or The New York Fauna, by James E. De Kay, and published in Albany, New York in 1844. This volume deals with birds and is one of only 300 copies with hand colored plates by J.W. Hill.

James De Kay was born in Lisbon, Portugal in 1792, and moved to New York with his family when he was 2 years old. From an early age he showed a great interest in natural history, but studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, graduating with an M.D. in 1819. Always an avid naturalist, he began working in earnest collecting specimens and descriptions when the legislature approved the Geological Survey of New York in 1835.  The Zoology of New York was published a few years later in five volumes.

Each print is in excellent condition, measuring approximately 8 3/4 inches by 11 1/4 inches. There is some occasional light foxing. Please review the photos carefully as they are very accurate. These prints are original antique prints guaranteed to be the stated age of over 160 years old.
