Les armes de la Ville de Copenhague VTD2 $325

These marvelous hand coloured copper engravings are from the first edition of the Danish Vitruvius, published in 1746.  It was the most important work of its kind in Denmark, showing the beautiful architecture and gardens of the day, similar to the Kip & Vitruvius in England.

Many of the buildings illustrated are by Johan Krieger, the favourite architect of Frederick IV who encouraged the integration of the architectural designs with those of the elaborate baroque landscaping.

The architect Thurah commissioned this work, employing expert German engravers in its execution.   Thurah himself was a notable Dutch architect of the 18th century and protégé of the King, Christian V1, who designed many buildings, including the famous Hirschholm Palace, considered the Versailles of the North.   Largely self taught, he brought the elaborate baroque style to Demark & remained enamored of this style his entire life.

In addition to his many architectural masterpieces, he has given the world this very historic & beautiful work on the castles and architectural wonders of Denmark, including their magnificent gardens and grounds.

Each print measure approximately 11 1/2 inches wide by 18 1/4 inches long and is on strong chain lined paper with the occasional watermark.  The paper is very fresh & there is only minor foxing on a couple of the prints.  These are very rare architectural prints & have an almost hand drawn quality to them, with the old copperplate writing and strong lines of the prints.  A copy of the title page will be included & there is no text.  Each print has been recently hand colored by one of the last remaining professional colorists in England.  These are ORIGINAL prints, so they are well over 250 years old!

Please note the plate marks of these prints may appear slightly distorted due to photographic effects. They are actually quite even & square in place.
