 John Parkinson was a professional
apothecary who wrote Paradisi in Sole, Paradisus
Terrestris, published in 1629. The title is a pun,
                        translating as “Park-in-sun's earthly paradise”.
Christopher Switzer provided the woodcuts for this work,
with many after Clusius & Lobel. Parkinson was an
original member of the Society of Apothecaries founded
in 1617 and served as First Botanist to the King under
Charles I. His true love was his garden, like
many of us today.  He was fortunate enough to retire
early on and devote himself to this walled garden at
Long Acre where he grew over 484 types of plants.  As
the foremost gardener & herbalist of the time, he was a
close friend of other luminaries in the botanical world
such as John Gerard, and John Tradescant the elder. We are offering a selection of
prints from the 1904 facsimile edition of Paradisi in
Sole published by Methuen & Co. in London & a
faithful reproduction of the original & now an antique
in its own right!  No expense was spared in this
publication and the prints are on beautifully hand made
chain lined paper with text on the verso as in the
original & in pristine condition. Each print measures
approximately 8 3/4 by 14 1/2 inches and is accompanied
by a copy of the decorative title page. The prints have been carefully &
beautifully  hand coloured for us in the style of these
ancient herbals by our English colorist who is an artist
in her own right. They are a delightful picture of the
English garden as it existed in the seventeenth
century, when many of the same flowers were grown that
we still prize today. We accept credit cards & PayPal. Washington state residents pay Washington
