Lulworth Castle in Dorsetshire, the Seat of Humphrey Weld Esq. WA12 $95
Each print measures approximately 10
1/2 inches wide by 7 3/4 inches long.
The Seats of the Nobility and Gentry, In a
Collection of the most interesting & Picturesque Views
was published and engraved by W. Watts in 1779.
These original copper engravings are after drawings and
paintings by the preeminent landscape artists of the
18th century, including Paul & Thomas Sandby.
Paul Sandby was an English topographical watercolorist
and graphic artist, born in Nottingham and brother of
Thomas Sandby. He began his career as a draughtsman and
later moved on to live with his brother at Windsor,
where he made many drawings of Windsor and Eton. Thomas
Gainsborough, the most versatile painter of the 18th
century and Sandby’s contemporary, considered Sandby to
be the only English landscape artist who painted ‘real
views from nature’ as opposed to artificial, idealized
drawings.
Each print measures approximately 10 1/2 by 7 3/4 inches long. The paper is light creamy in color with occasional foxing. It is
a strong thick handmade paper, chain lined &
occasionally watermarked.
A copy of the title page & the original text
description accompanies each print. These prints
are in marvelous condition for their age of over 225
years.
