Waterhouse Hawkins Fish Prints 1830

While our images are electronically watermarked, the antique prints themselves are not.

Whiptail Catfish WH8 $55
Each print measures approximately 16 1/2 by 11 inches

Recently, we purchased  a bound scap book in two volumes which had been compiled by a fish afficionado of yesteryear.  Unfortuntely, he knew little of print preservation & in the manner so beloved of Victorians in their scrapbooks,  had actually cut out the fishes from the body of the print to paste in his book.

Imagine our surpise when we discovered that there were a few pristine jewels in the otherwise motley & damaged selection. The first, pictured at the top of the page, is the Constricted Chaetodon Fish, or Old Wife.  It is an original hand coloured engraving by George Shaw’s Zoology of New Holland, 1794, in excellent condition & very rare. See page 28 of Dance’s Classic Natural History Prints: Fish

The balance of the prints are a selection from John Edward Grays’s Illustrations of Indian Zoology, 1830.  The artist for this work was Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins, a prolific natural history sculptor and artist who gained fame everlasting through his life-size dinosaur statues both in The Smithsonian Museum & the Crystal Palace.
