Citambel RHE17 $375
These prints measure approximately 19
inches wide by 15 inches long.
These beautiful botanical engravings are from
Hortus Indicus Malabaricus, continens regni Malabarici
apud Indos celeberrimi omnis generis plantas rariores,
Latinis, Malabaricis, Arabicis, a compendium of the
plants of economic value in the south Indian Malabar
region. Another gift of the colonial era, it was
edited by Hendrik A. van Rheede, head of the Dutch East
Indies Company in India in 1684. It was the
first book of the flora of the East Indies.
Published in twelve volumes in 1686, it was the
collaborative effort of almost one hundred artists,
scientists, professors, and company officials, who
contributed to this work by collecting specimens,
creating drawings, crafting the plates, and editing the
material.
The prints feature the plant's name in Latin,
Malayalam, Arabic, and Sanskrit. The condition of
the prints is excellent, with only a little foxing that
is mostly marginal. They are on handmade
chain-lined paper, measuring approximately 19 inches
wide by 15 inches long.
