Joseph Pitton de Tournefort, (1656-1708) was born at Aix
en Provence, France. Destined by his family for the
priesthood he was spared by the death of his father.
After studying medicine at Montpellier, he was appointed
professor of botany at the Jardin des Plantes by the
King. He traveled extensively through western Europe,
including Asia Minor where he collected specimens,
describing this time in the book “Relation d’un voyage
du Levant”, Lyons, 1717.
His principal work is entitled Institutiones Rei
Herbariae, in which Tournefort classifies all plants
into genera, giving a nomenclature that remained
standard until Linnaeus a half century later. In
America, Will Byrd, Thomas Jefferson, and James Logan
all owned copies.
Each print measures approximately 7 inches wide by 9
1/2 inches long and is in excellent condition, with the
paper quite white & the colors very vivid. The prints
have been beautifully hand colored by our professional
botanical colorist in the UK. There is no descriptive
text, but a copy of the title page will be included.
Please inspect the image carefully, as it is very
accurate. All our prints are original antique prints,
and these prints are about 300 years old.
