The Reverend Richard Polwhele (1760-1838) was born at Truro, Cornwall, and went to Christ Church at Oxford, without receiving a degree.  He is known as a poet, essayist, clergyman and topographer.  He published The History of Devonshire in three volumes between 1793-1806,  then lost the support of his subscribers.  He published several volumes of poetry, many theological essays and sermons, and contributed to the Gentleman's Magazine and the Anti-Jacobin Review. We are pleased to offer a selection of original copper engravings from The History of Devonshire, all in excellent condition. The prints measure approximately 16 1/2 inches wide by 10 1/4 inches long and are on a heavy wove paper that is quite white.  On some, the plate marks are shaved.  The prints have been recently hand colored by one of the few remaining colorists whose specialty is landscape & architecture.  Accompanying each print, is a copy of the title page.
