The Reverend Richard Polwhele (1760-1838) was born at
Truro, Cornwall, and went to Christ Church at Oxford,
without receiving a degree. He is known as a poet,
essayist, clergyman and topographer. He published
The History of Devonshire in three volumes
between 1793-1806,
then lost the support of his subscribers. He
published several volumes of poetry, many theological
essays and sermons, and contributed to the Gentleman's
Magazine and the Anti-Jacobin Review. (reference

engravings from The History of Devonshire, all in excellent condition. The
prints measure approximately 16 1/2
inches wide by 10 1/4 inches long and are on a heavy
wove paper that is quite white. On some, the plate
marks are shaved. The prints have been recently
hand colored by one of the few remaining colorists whose
specialty is landscape & architecture.
Accompanying each print, is a copy of the
title page.
