Botanical Prints from
Paxton's Flower Garden

While our images are electronically watermarked, the antique prints themselves are not.

Long-Leaved Bromeliad #PF65

An illustrious English horticulturist, Joseph Paxton was born in 1801. Even without a formal education, his dedication to horticulture eventually earned him a seat in the House of Commons and a knighthood. His Magazine of Botany series, published in 16 volumes from 1834-1849 have become highly prized for their brilliant colors and the outstanding beauty of the plants illustrated. With Professor Lindley, he also published Paxton’s Flower Garden, usually found in three volumes with 108 hands colored plates in 1850-1853.

It is from the first edition of this much rarer and larger work that we are offering these prints. It is a work distinguished by the artistry and graceful composition of the plates, which also retain the beautiful and intense hand coloring that the Magazine of Botany is noted for.   The superb illustrations are the work of  L. Constans & A. E. Prevost who produced paintings of "miraculous fine quality" according to Blunt. Their illustrations for this work are considered superior to those of the Magazine of Botany.

Each print is untrimmed, and large at approximately 8 by 10 1/2 inches and is accompanied by the relevant descriptive text whenever possible. The text is also embellished with many beautiful and artistic woodcuts of plants, so it is a prize in itself. The condition of these prints is excellent, with the paper a soft creamy color & almost entirely free of foxing. They are all beautifully hand colored.. Please inspect the image carefully, as it is very accurate. These prints are about 170 years old and are some of the most vivid and splendidly hand colored prints of this entire epoch.
