Poinsettia Pulcherrima (Christmas Plant) NOO22 $695
Each print measures approximately 15 1/2 inches by 23 3/4 inches.
We are pleased to present the entire collection of
superb tropical botanicals and fruits from Fleurs,
Fruits et Feuillages Choisis de l'Ile de Java Peints
D'Après Nature by Berthe Hoola van Nooten.
In her early 20’s Hoola von Nooten found herself in
desperate circumstances, stranded on the Island of Java,
almost penniless, after the death of her husband. Like
several great and hugely resourceful women artists
before her, including Maria Merian and Elizabeth
Blackwell, she responded by creating this breathtaking
study of the plants of Java. Queen Mathilde-Sophie of
the Netherlands, to whom the work is dedicated, was her
patron.
Her preface appeals to women in general and speaks of
the difficulties they encounter in life and the pain of
exile. It is hard to imagine that a young woman could
have accomplished such a project in the 21st century,
let alone in 1882. She addresses the dire circumstances
of her motivation for the work, the death of her
husband, and the solace found in its creation. In her
final sentence, she appeals to the solidarity of women
to support her, a woman far ahead of here time!
It was published in the early days of chromolithography
and its huge plates are among the most vibrant and
beautiful images ever produced. Each print is on thick,
soft white paper with very few imperfections of any kind
& is accompanied by the appropriate text page and a copy
of the original title page.
