We are pleased to offer a selection of prints from Beautiful Leaved Plants. Being a Description of the Most Beautiful Leaved Plants in Cultivation in This Country, by E.J. Lowe, 1861. Many different species of leafy plants are illustrated, such as begonia, poinsettia, ivy, ferns and caladium.

Edward Joseph Lowe was an independently wealthy naturalist and member of the Royal society, who also published other works such as A History of Ferns, British and Exotic, in 1856-60 & A Natural History of British Grasses in 1862. A.F. Lydon was the artist and supervised the color engraving of the plates & funding for the enterprise likely was provided by Lowe himself.

Each print measures approximately 6 inches by 9 3/4 inches on creamy white paper. The hand coloring is vibrant, with some of the prints enhanced with gold paint and most with gum arabic.
