Jane Webb Loudon (1807-1858) struggled with financial
difficulties all her life. Left impoverished by her
father, she wrote a novel, The Mummy, Tales for the
Twenty Second Century, which became a bestseller.
Through it, she met her husband, a botanical
illustrator. She decided to write botanical books the
ordinary person could understand. Her first,
Instructions in Gardening for Ladies, was a great
success. She is renowned for her monumental works with
lavish plates, including The Ladies Flower Garden of
Ornamental Annuals, The Ladies Flower Garden of
Ornamental Perennials, and British Wild Flowers.
