Peony 7   SNF7 $575
Each print measures approximately 21 1/2 inches by 16 inches.

For a long time, we have admired and collected works from Asia.  Since our website has become so large and eclectic, it seems time recognize the great tradition of wood block prints, and the enormous influence of Asian art on Western artists.

Our latest find is this rare set of peony woodblock botanical prints by Tanigami Konan (1879-1928).  While little known in the Western, Konan has created some of the most beautiful botanical prints of all times.  This series of 20 studies of peonies is one of the finest collections we have ever seen.  The work was first displayed at the Teiten, or Imperial Exhibition, of 1917.  As Western-styled lithography began taking over the print-making world, the 1917 exhibition chose only the best artists to create traditional Japanese art made to the highest standards.

These peony prints are from the first edition printing, made in an unusually large and magnificent format for woodblock prints.  The image size is approximately 21 1/2 x 16 inches on thick, creamy handmade paper with a natural deckle edge.  The photos, while accurate, do not show the subtle surface variations that add to the richness and detail of each piece.
