As lovers of all fine botanical illustration, we have decided to expand our selection to include important works from the 20th century, which has truly seen a renaissance in this art form. Important among these are the watercolors of new species of orchids commissioned by the Royal Horticultural Society of Great Britain.

This tradition was started in the 1950’s when the Royal Horticultural Society engaged the service of a young artist, Nellie Roberts, to paint newly awarded species of orchids on an annual basis. This work was continued by M.I. Humphries, from whose art we now offer a beautiful selection.

Irene Humphries was part of the elite orchid world of the 1970’s. She was married to the manager of one of the largest orchid ranges in the United Kingdom, Armstrong & Brown, which later established a similar company in the U.S. This company was very active in the orchid world, buying many collections and hybridizing using the technology of the day, now much improved.

We are offering original watercolors of the new species of awarded orchids, all beautifully painted on artist’s board. The style is exactly the same as was established by the Royal Horticultural Society with Nellie Roberts. Each painting measures approximately 71/2 inches by 101/2, though there are a few which may be slightly smaller, all signed on the verso. On some there may be remnants of tape on the verso only. The watercolors are indeed a superb rarity and a fantastic addition to the collection of the orchid fancier, all genuine original watercolours, at a very modest price given both their historical importance and beauty.
