We are delighted to present yet another work printed
by Benjamin Fawcett after drawings by A.F. Lydon.
"British Fresh Water Fishes" is one of the most beloved
books of the era and was reissued and reprinted up to
1900. This edition is the first, with 41 stunning fishes
of folio size in pristine condition. Benjamin Fawcett
was one of the greatest color printers of the 19th
century. He pioneered a system of wood block engraving
from multiple wood blocks that resulted in vivid finely
colored works such as this marvelous book. This process
was called chromoxylography (color wood engraving).
Other examples of this original printing technique are
"Greene’s Parrots in Captivity" and "Hibberd’s
Greenhouse Favorites". Fawcett had an association of
some 50 years with Francis Orpen Morris to produce many
beautiful works on birds, including the highly
successful "A History of British Birds". The illustrations are very vivid, beautifully colored
wood engravings and are among the finest of all the
illustrations of fish from this period. Each fish is
stunningly portrayed in its native habitat, accompanied
by a chapter of text headed with a scenic wood cut. Ref:
"Benjamin Fawcett, Engraver & Color Printer", 1988 p178. The prints are in remarkable condition, with the
colors of a beauty and vividness still fresh and vibrant
to this day. The paper has remained quite white and the
colors very intense. Each print measures approximately
14 inches by 10 inches with generous margins. There is no foxing. These prints are original antique prints about 120
years old and guaranteed to be authentic. In our
opinion, this is Fawcett's finest work on fishes and is
becoming ever more scarcer and expensive. We accept credit cards, PayPal, checks, and money
