Fashion Prints from Journal Des Dames et Des Demoiselles, 1869-1874

While our images are electronically watermarked, the antique prints themselves are not.

#JD4 - $45

We are pleased to offer prints from Journal Des Dames et Des Demoiselles in the Belgian edition. It was of course, a Ladies’ Journal, perhaps the precursor of such fashion magazines as Vogue. The copies we have came from a Belgian Corset Purveyor & Clothier of the day, as we have their embossed stamps on some of the prints. The Journal was issued monthly & covered many aspects of a lady’s life, presenting a fascinating glimpse of the times. There are stories, fashion articles, patterns for needlework, crochet & the crafts of the day, lots of hats & above all the glorious hand colored prints of women and children in marvelous and elaborate costumes of the day. It is interesting to note how popular the color blue was in this period.

Each print is small folio, measuring approximately 9 1/2 inches wide by 12 inches long, on high quality, heavy paper. The prints are detailed engravings, in brilliant hand coloring and there is some difference in the size of the paper, depending on the year of issue, but the images are all about the same size. The double prints measure about 18 inches by 12 inches long. There is little foxing, though on some there may be slightly creamy paper or faint edge toning. There are many unusual and beautiful images of an elegant, bygone era. A copy of the title page will be included.
