The Historical Antiquities of Hertfordshire is one of the earliest topographical works of Great Britain, first published in 1700 by Sir Henry Chauncy. Only 500 copies were produced of the first edition and few remain intact.  The second edition, which we are pleased to offer here, was produced in 1826 by John Morse Mullinger in Bishop's Stortford about which Chauncy wrote, "This town is built in the form of a cross, having four streets pointing east, west, north and south; and is situated in an wholesome and sweet air, on dry soil, on the east side of a hill facing the rising sun…."  The English County of Hertfordshire was originally in an area assigned to the Hertford fortress, constructed just north of greater London in 913 A.D. The name of Hertfordshire first appears in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle in 1011 A.D.

Sir Henry Chauncy was born in 1632 in Hertfordshire, lived his entire life there and died in 1719.  He was a lawyer and in 1681 received knighthood from Charles II.  In that same year, he inherited his father's estate which eventually allowed him to give up the legal profession and devote his full attention to the history of Hertfordshire.

This work in its entirety contains 45 views of stately castles, manors, homes and grounds of nobility and gentry in the Hertfordshire area.  As compared to Kip's Gloucestershire, these views are charming in their simplicity.  Each print is recently hand-colored by our professional English colorist and measures approximately 9 1/2 x 11 3/4 inches. The paper is wove and has light mottling that does not detract from the image.  Each print is accompanied by a copy of the title page.
