Asteroceras Ammonite CBS20A $145

We are pleased to offer these beautiful, hand-colored illustrations from this scarce first edition work, dated 1889, and engraved by Mr. Preston from Captain Brown's original drawings on the subject. Altogether there are 114 lithographic plates by W. H. Lizars of which 98 are numbered in the plate, and the others are not numbered.

Captain Brown was a well-known natural history scientist who held many memberships in scientific organizations in 19th century England including the Royal Physical Society, the Wernerian Natural History Society, and the Manchester Geological and Natural History Societies. He traveled extensively and drew his subjects from live specimens he found on his travels. The fossils in this work were drawn from actual fossils found in the field.

The prints from this copy are ORIGINAL sepia lithographs from 1889 that have been carefully hand colored by one of the few remaining professional colorists in England. To the extent possible, they have been colored to match their current day descendants. Each print measures approximately 9 3/4 inches wide by 12 1/2 inches long. The condition of the plates is excellent, with the paper being slightly creamy. A copy of the title page will be included with each print.
