#BC81 $155
Each measures approximately 8 1/2
by 12 1/2 inches.
We are delighted to offer engravings from the dynamic
and exceedingly rare work of George Andreas Boeckler
(1648 – 1685), “Architectura Curiosa Nova” published in
1664 in Nuremberg, Germany. Boeckler, a German architect
and engineer from Nuremberg was fascinated with
water-raising devices, mills and other industrial
machinery, fountains and all things mechanical,
especially machines with many gears and complex moving
parts.
“Architectura Curiosa Nova” is a comprehensive overview
of the fountains of Europe with an introduction about
the technical side of hydraulic engineering. It shows
many examples of fountains and the differing effects
that can be created by the flow of water through them.
Also shown are the settings of many fountains including
garden architecture, the views of houses of their
privileged inhabitants, and the gardens and grottoes on
the grounds where these fountains were located. Many of
them include schematics for the mazes and labyrinths
which were also part of the garden plan for these
beautiful settings.
Each black and white engraving is strongly rendered on
lightly creamy, chain-lined paper that is in remarkably
good condition for a work that is now almost 350 years
of age. There is occasional very minor foxing or faint,
marginal damp staining that in no way detracts from the
remarkable beauty of the images. Each print is
approximately 8 1/2 by 12 1/2 inches and will be
accompanied by a copy of the frontispiece. It is truly a
wonderful work that not only has historical and
scientific value, but presents these beautiful feats of
engineering and architecture in a superbly decorative
manner.
